The company also offers 2.5" SiliconDrive III SSDs with IDE interfaces,...

As opposite to SATA? Didn't you mean PATA?

Or am I wrong?

Based on there read/write speeds I'd guess there SLC's using Samsung based memory controllers.

Well they sound awful! However WD have to start somewhere! Before they are priced out of the industry selling old style disks.

In 4 years time ALL PC's will come with a regular SSD.

The markets they're targeting are the same markets that SiliconSystems already had a presence in. We use some of their hardware (the previous-gen SiliconDrive II actually) where I work, in fact I have a few of their CF and USB "disk on module" SSDs sitting on my desk.

I believe they use their own controller and firmware, though I suppose it may be a tweaked version of something they've licensed from elsewhere. We selected them because they are available in versions which are qualified for use at extreme temperatures, and they have a special "secure erase" command which can zero the entire device in just a few seconds (yes, it's a military application).

Unless WD starts aggressively pushing them into the consumer market, I don't see them becoming price competitive with other consumer SSD options any time soon. The units I'm currently working with cost several times as much as consumer SSDs of similar capacity.

For their sake, they better have the quality and reliability down as well as a low price, since their specs are anemic compared to other current SSD models.

I'd love to see a review of one of these on here.

well, this time, there's more than 2 to 3 competitors, so quality and reliability are just 1 of 11 reasons to file. this should be an LoL!

WD is known for their quality and reliability (outside of Raptors). I'm looking forward to seeing how well built these are. I hope they can handle Geoff's SSD test and put up some good numbers.

I'd really like one of the 1.8" SSDs for my laptop...I really dislike the slowness of a 5400rpm drive
