There was this short period of time, a couple of years ago, when laptop gpus seemed to catch up with performance-mainstream desktop gpus.

Ah, but it was to be a brief interlude only. Nowadays laptop graphics are shit again.

nvidia ,in my opion must be the greedest of all cpu_gpu man-_fab . example 9800 gtx + die shrink more chips per waffer.but no saving's past on .same with the 'new' 55nm GeForce GTX 260 Core 216, SC Edition 626Mhz clock. not that the other tech's are any better
