Well until this is explained....
http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1332 His credibility will be in question. How does Vista SP1 suddenly reverse its standing against XP? Its the same guy and most benchmarks I have seen says XP is faster than Vista SP1. Yet in his most recent article XP is now slower in most tests? Did they have yet another "performance update" for Vista, post SP1? Did XP SP3 slow XP down??? Funny there were a bunch of articles stating SP3 sped up XP. Boot up speed is a joke really. With Vista X amount of things started first before you could do anything, and then the rest loaded in the back ground after you got a GUI. Now Windows 7 gives you a GUI quicker and then loads more in the background. Waiting for other sources. |

LOL What?
The entire article is complete garbage. Let's "preview" an incomplete product that will most likely not reflect the final version. Let's slap on some arbitrary scoring system for addition trolling flavor. What is the result? Free marketing buzz and additional ad $$$$ to ZDnet. I would love to paid $$$$ to be a professional troller (a.k.a BS writer). |

Well there are copies of windows 7 all over torrent sites. I'm not really into piracy, but you could always get yourself a copy and do your own tests.

My favorite part of the whole win7 bruhaha is that the "leaked/stolen" version is # 7000.

Apparently they have updated the Vista boxes to reflect the release of Windows 7

This is just a "how is W7 coming along" story. A lot of people are curious, so it is a good story. I have heard from multiple sources that W7 is quite good. I am using it, and I have no major complaints.

Let's be sensible here and completely ignore ZDnet's entirely worthless article.
One wonders why the author chose to deliver his results in a purely qualitative fashion? What has he or what has MS got to hide? Show us the EVIDENCE that Windows 7 is faster and we will acknowledge that your article is useful. I'm disappointed that TR, with its fantastic history of thorough, clear, and scientifically valid results even chose to point out this article. |

Well I hope there is an improvement but until things require 64 bit or at least more ram I don't have a huge incentive to upgrade OSes.

i think the very same as other people in the website. Look at numbers and you will see what they are showing. Vista is worse in dual core, but improves performance on quad core. Like someone said before... vista upgrades performance on newer hardware. I'm not vista lover, but have no sense buidling a gaming machine with 2 or 3Gb of ram Anymore. Pointing to 64bits operating system, i rely more on Vista than XP.

This is exactly the sort of stuff I want to see. Now that we can be reasonably sure (the tests weren't exactly detailed, but...) that most common Windows tasks are going to be faster than they were in Windows XP on relatively modern hardware. This is an improvement. My main caveat is that these tasks were already fast, and being a quarter of a second or half a second or a couple seconds faster here and there won't make a difference. If they can show me that games and professional apps run faster or at the very least perform mostly the same, then I'm sold.

This coming from the same people that said Vista was superior to XP?
This coming from the same people that said Raid-5 was an effective home backup solution back in 2002? Ignoring the fact if the house burns down all the disks go with it? This coming from the same people that said Linux was a fad and Unix was dead? This coming from the same people ... oh hell I can write all day, DOES ANYONE EVEN LISTEN TO ZD FOLK ANYMORE?! The B as in B, S as in S that has been coming out of their mouths for the last what 5 years now? They are village idiot of the Internet with just enough rope to hang themselves and take a bunch of non-techies with them. |

This article should really have mentioned that the actual benchmark results are obscured because the Windows7 Beta EULA specifically forbids posting any benchmark scores.
The drama fairies will just have to keep their nerd rage bottled up :) |
