Glad you said it PRIME1 , because I was ready to explode if it wasn't said.
That's exactly what I bought GTX 260 for $199.00 for my <$1,000.00 rig.
I'm still happy because it's still an excellent price - and it has exceeded my expectations and it comes overclocked as you may have noticed in the reviews.
Not a single issue with - the included drivers works wonderfully, the panel config accessed by right click desktop is great - customizing for a huge list of games included.
I simply cannot imagine someone going 4850 and even 4870 - since you're either near the same price for so much less performance, or you're $100 over that price for the same give or take the game - minus the driver support, and game compatibility, etc.
I made a very wise choice.
I'll also MOAN that in so many of the reviews and benchmark comparisons, the places love to put two 4750's together or two 4780's but they never seem to want to do two GTX260's - which scale VERY WELL.
So, it's not always what they include that should almost always tip everyone off, but indeed what they leave out.
I found ONE review chart with the 260's sli'ed. LOL Just one.....now something is up with that - I guess AMD/ATI have a lot of friends, or some wise reviewers who dearly hope to keep competition going well so we get those lovely price drops which have been coming so often of late.

Ok, so anyway, who thinks dealing with CCC and the dotnet must install horrors as well as the use this other catalyst driver version "fix" so often NEEDED, is worth it ?
Hmm... well it's kinda too late if you're stuck with that problem. At least you can brag about "Conan" being faster. Not much of a tradeoff, really, and BTW - make sure you use catalyst 8.7 for that Conan win, or you might have BSD's.

Nvidia cards don't really need custom coolers as often as recent ATi cards, the dual slot coolers in particular have been excellent ever since the 8800GTX. NV does have a big advantage in board partners too, from warranty length to quality of support the NV partners are just plain better.

Not that I expect you guys to do this data mining often but since the data is there might as well graph it next time...the minimum price after MIR would be good to know as well. There are a few cases where this makes a certain card stand out as a deal, atm I'd have to say the GTX260 original at $200 after MIR from MSI or $230 after MIR w/ Farcry2 from eVGA stands out. That kind of performance in at $200 8 months ago was unheard of, the HD4000s really shook things up.

I've been scouring info about video cards a lot lately and what I finally concluded is that there is rarely a free lunch these days. Aside from unusual deals video cards scale very smoothly in power draw/performance and price/performance except sometimes at the very top and bottom. Along with the every-$25 pricing it makes deciding not so easy.

Jesus, look at the top of the list. The performance of the 4870 1GB and the GTX 260 (216) is neck and neck, and the price average is even closer.

Things sure are tight at that price point. This is a competitive market in all it's glory. This is what we didn't have when the 8800GTX first came out and blew away anything from team red.

Things seem to separate as you go down the list though.

Why they compare 9600GSO to HD4670 when you can get 9600GT for the same price and it performs better than both

If you have median AR, why not have lowest price AR?

You can get a GTX 260 for $199.

Actually even without the rebate it's $240.

Huh.

Everyone at TechReport I want to say that I criticised you in the past because of MIR and reviews of pre overclocked models.
BUT this post is quite interesting and very useful because the difference in price can be extrapolated to other currencies and that is useful to everyone. So thanks for this data mining and keep that good job.

we should note that Nvidia tends to have a stronger list of board partners with broader offerings in terms of custom coolers, game bundles, and the range and scope of "overclocked in the box" cards offered.

Also CUDA which brings Photoshop plug-ins, video transcoding, game physics and the best folding@home performance.

I like the price comparisons but would it be possible to do a couple (2 or 3) price vs. perfromance scatter plots? I'm sort of curios how the top cards compare in terms of performance and price to the lower end cards. Of course I'm being lazy and could in theory do this myself but then again I'm lazy. Mostly I want to see how the new reloaded and 1 gig 4870 compare to their untweaked brothers.

Good competition. I just hope ATI can keep it up next time around to keep Nvidia from monopolizing the market once again.
