Yes, it's something to worry about. I JUST got my HP back from a month of repair...AT MY OWN COST.
Yes, HP had a lawsuit that "settled" the support of the failures...too bad HP didn't bother to notify me of this fact, even though the laptop was purchased DIRECTLY from HP itself. HP therefore had a name, an address, telephone number AND credit card information to trace back to this exact laptop...and they did SQUAT. And when the laptop failed 2 months ago and I called HP for repairs...they said "NO". The term of the service settlement agreement had lapsed - all of a VERY convenient 3 months - and I was left out in the cold. I paid for the repairs out of my own pocket. 2 years extended coverage is squat because there is a good 50/50 chance that the companies won't bother to notify the owners in the first place. I wish I could start a brand-new action against HP just for the CRAPPY way (3 month window!) they handled this entire nVidia situation. |

Interesting how the Inspiron 1720 again manages to avoid any consideration in this situation. The 1720 sports the 8600M and 8400M.

#10 Ryu -
Yeah, that is a bit of a worry. Luckily mine has a 3 year warranty anyway, and the current BIOS doesn't seem to raise the fan speed much. Maybe they cool better than the others. |

The XPS1330 will be happy as well about this extended warranty, however, it better be added to the end of the 3 year warranty it already has otherwise, it's useless.

So, I'm still confused about this. There's only a risk if you have BOTH an Nvidia chipset and GPU?

I don't see why it should worry at all. The vendors have consistently said the problem was limited to specific models of laptop. It appears the 1720 is unaffected by the problem. It hasn't even received a BIOS update to adjust fan behavior.
I've had mine for close to a year now and been hammering the 8600M real hard and had zero issues.
Well, if you look closely at the list, it's all business-grade laptops aside from the XPS, which is premium consumer-grade
Grats at failing at reading. Might want to look at that list again and note the Inspiron model.
