I seem to remember everyone moaning that xp was bulky, resource hogging pile of crap when that came out, and what are we all using now? mmmm I have tried vista and overall its good, a bit slow compared to xp on the same hardware but thats always going to be when MS bring out a new OS, but guess what! As operating systems get more resource hungry CPUs Ram etc all get faster too!

I suppose my point is, if you dont like vista quit bitching and dont use it, it isn't that hard!

This is friggin moronic, you can put a computer illiterate, show how Norton commander works and he will say WOW.

Then, for a fair comparison, they could put two identical PC's, one with Vista one with XP and two people to perform same task, we would quickly see how 'productive' and 'fast' Vista really is.

I really do think that Vista is a step back. It's slow, counterproductive and a hog. Nothing cool about that.

And after I've spend quite a good amount of cash to get my system running at XP performance levels I will honestly say that everyone who says Vista is faster and more productive is probably 'weird'.

this is all flamethrower material. the simple fact is that if xp is what you're used to you're going to prefer it.

vista x64 is the only way to go if you want to address 4gb+ of memory and still be using windows (or even == 4gb, as the vid card eats into your address space).

vista gets crappy press from "power" users who get confused when someone moves things around based on ui research that shows 90% of people don't need to customize their shell to the nth degree.

the longer an operating system gestates the more inertia there is going to be to adoption.

vista's kernel is huge and monolithic but the simple fact is its better. there is more stuff tacked on, but if your machine from 2002 can't handle it so be it; get a job and upgrade some things.

if you want one salient detail to take away from any xp vista comparison it should be that 64bit is where things are going and 64bit support is just better with vista. take the bad with the good and stop whining.

They don't look all that impressed really. A lot of them obviously pretend they are impressed and that they didn't figure it out. They mostly don't care, they just don't want to offend.

It's pretty sad for a marketing campaign to say "our brand image is so bad people really expect surprisingly little of us".

This is going to hurt Microsoft more than it'll help. They're trying too hard, and are losing tons of dignity. Signature "developers, developers, developers" attitude.

LOL #1...

We always knew MS was malicious, but never knew that they would actually CUT PEOPLE UP to promote vista.

on a serious note, I use Vista, and love it. I dont want to have the conversation, but essentially, Vista requires more juice to run than XP. It does more than XP, so it makes sense...

I really want to see this done on some of the forum trolls though. Those people who have never even seen vista, but regurgitate random snippets of negative criticism.

Tricking old people FTW!

On another note, I find it extremely ironic that this page uses Flash 9 rather than Silverlight.

Yeah right, Windows 2000 and XP with classic theme look so similar I am not sure if that 20-something will be able to spot that. Expecting a boatload of GUI changes from one version to another is not that correct.

I liked the videos. I am sorry some of you failed to get and understand what Microsoft was trying to prove here. That these sheeple probably didnt upgrade to vista based on what they have heard about it and not by having used it. They just showed users what vista could do is all and some of its features. It wasnt flashy in anyway. Their test laptop wasnt that big of a beast. Core 2 with 2 gigs of ram... woah daddy dont blow me away with those specs.

Problem is people dont want to relearn stuff. We have had xp so long that its part of our own brains kinda. So, throwing in vista makes it feel unfamiliar and strange, But i guarantee anyone who gives Vista a chance will see that it IS a great operating system. Heck, the security alone is worth the upgrade to me. I have no had a single spyware/virus attack since I upgraded.

"Update: The percentages for different OS users on the Mojave info page add up to 121%, so Microsoft probably made a typo somewhere."

"84%+22%+14%+1% . . . That's not 100."

For the people who posted above, did you guys stop to think that maybe some of the users used more than one OS?

Oh Wow, so showing a splashy demo to someone and then asking if they like it automatically proves Vista is superior ??! LOL

How about they give a copy of mojave to those 140 poor souls and get them to install it and use it on a daily basis for 140 days. And THEN ask them what they thought about it ! Now this sounds like a more scientific way of measuring the quality of an OS.

But then again, this is just the usual bs marketing campaign by ms except now it's not their server product but their desktop one that they're targeting.

Interestingly, many of the users in the videos seem to be aged over 30 and not exceedingly computer-literate. Perhaps that's because Microsoft had a harder time fooling younger subjects: in one of the videos, a 20-something respondent comments, "I don't know, there's something fishy about this. . . . 'Cause if it was a new OS, it'd look a hell of a lot different in my opinion. I'm getting the feeling here that this is Vista."

I think it's probably because old people are the ones who hear all the bad things about "The Veesta." Young people are just stupid, and refuse to change their opinions no matter what kind of logic or trickery you throw about. :D

Firstly, I want to say you should use Vista x64 if you have the hardware.

Everyone on here, readers of tech sites, and people who generally know how to build a computer will know that Vista uses more resources because of more processes that are running. So this "bloatware" as some of you would like to call it had finally gotten passed down by word of mouth and everyone talks about how it's terrible.

Microsoft probably hadn't anticipated all the negative views of Vista and is therefore throwing this campaign to show that it's actually decent (when running on decent hardware to a desktop that could be had for probably 600 if you DIY).

However, I work as a tech support consultant and fact is that most people don't know what hardware is in their system. What hardware is required to run their operating system and most don't even know the answer "what operating system are you running?" So for majority of users out there running their awesome Apple II computers (jk, computers bought from vendors for 400-800 dollars that are 3+ years old) won't be "Wow-ed" when they install vista if they can even. They won't be Wow-ed when they purchase 400-800 dollar laptops from vendors today even because there are no dedicated graphics cards in them while running intel celeron/pentium dual core cpus, or old AMD mobile turion cpus, and I bet they're using crappy, "slow" (to us tech savy people) ram.

In short, Windows 7 needs to be revolutionary like the Wii, while not using "double" the requirements from Vista (as they have been doing for the past generations of windows). This is the case because people will not buy a new computer until forced to and thus should be sufficient time (2010) to have the required hardware to reacquire "smooth"/unlaggy performance with operating systems.

P.S. Tech support consultants make good people angry and realize how many computer illiterate people are out there...shameless plug as to why 59 million Americans are stupid can be seen if you google images: 59 million americans daily mirror.

I can see MS using this on TV ads with a little note to the effect: "If you want to see more, go to www.mojaveexperiment.com" or whatever. But what is its purpose, and who is the intended audience here? If you buy a new PC system today, Vista will be installed, so there's no choice involved. If you buy Vista to install yourself, you're likely bright enough to see this as simply marketing, but you're going to install Vista anyway. So is this for people considering Mac or Linux systems? That's a pretty small percentage still, though maybe MS feels compelled to counter the PC guy - Mac guy commercials. Curious.

I watched the first video thing that was a composite of several people. All of them seem like a bunch of computer-illiterate fools.

Listen, you can make an ignorant person believe whatever you want them to believe, but they got their preconceptions from somewhere, and that was the more-informed Gerbil population. Enthusiasts know their stuff, and those ignorant masses eventually follow what they say.

I for one enjoyed the videos. It's funny/sad to see just how mis-informed a lot of people really were, which is exactly what so many of us have been saying for a long time. Kudos to Microsoft for having the balls to prove it.

I wish them the best of luck with this campaign.. I use vista, xp, and linux pretty equally and while I find vista annoying in a lot of ways I think that mostly has to do with the 're-learning' curve. For most users I do think it's a very well made product.. (the extra security features alone are worth an upgrade for the not-so-computer-inclined), I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for it (MSDNAA student)

1% of 140 is 1. He or she should get a t-shirt that says "I were a Linux users," and wear it proudly. Maybe they could even add Cyril's byline and add it to TR's line of fashion apparel.

Hey! What's with the over 30 denegration?! Computers and the Windows OS have been an integral part of their entire lives. I don't believe the 20-something crowd is any more computer/OS savvy than the 30, 40 or 50 something crowd. They are just more vocal with their opininions.
