I hope someone starts saying how evil asus is now and killing competition. (I'm making fun of people that hate creative labs)

Asus is evil and is killing competition (along with Creative). The X-fi and Xonar are poorly supported under Linux. Other CMI-8788 cards work better.

The options for a high-end Linux sound card are becoming few and far between.

With the integration of sound capabilities on mobos and now GFX cards, the market for discrete soundcards is getting really tiny.

I still use one in my gaming PC (the Xmystify, which I got then as replacement for the missing soundstorm, when DDL wasn't yet available on other mobos).

Since digital sound transmission to a good AV receiver can now be done via DTS or maybe later 7.1 LinearPCM over HDMI, I don't really the use for those super high end D/A converters anymore.

And for the the 3d calculations of the sound environment, why not use the GPU via CUDA, OpenCL, or whatever. With higher end Mobos having three to four PCIeX16 slots, this should be a performance issue - a very passively cooled second or third lower end GFX card should do the job.

This is beginning of the end for mainstream discrete audio cards.

It's not that Asus can do no wrong, it's that they've not had such a long record of screwing enthusiasts and consumers more broadly compared to Creative.

That said, I'm loving my Xonar, which incidentally replaced an X-Fi that continually snap-crackle-popped on my Vista x64 rig.

If creative didn't have everyones nuts in a vice, Asus wouldn't be forced to do this!! </sarcasm>

Asus are buttholes. They couldn't have cared less that i had TWO of their motherboard burst into FLAMES within 3 weeks of each other at a job I was working a few years back.
