I found two website that quote an ETA for the E8400 around 3/31/2008
Priced @ 207.33 http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi?action=thispage&thispa... Priced @ 233.97 http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?ID=1179654 |

Interesting that mobile Penryn-cores are easier to find. It only took a week for me to get my ThinkPad T61 with a T8300 processor in it, and I could have chosen a T8100 or T9300 with the same turnaround time.

The E8400 is certainly available if you are willing to pay for it. NewEgg has it out of stock at $249.99. I picked mine up last week for $282.95 from www.interproshop.com. Their price has since risen to $297.90, but at last check they had it in stock.
I probably would have waited except my main machine decided to force an upgrade on me. Running my normal desktop on a 1.6GHz Pentium M is painful. --SS |

"$62 more than Intel's official price tag of $183"
That is how much Intel charges retailers for the processors, not how much retailers are supposed to charge us. The cost of the processors will always exceed that, unless Intel gives discounts for buying in units of 10,000 instead of 10,000, but I imagine any such discount would be small. |

I don't want to wait for the E8400 but I dont want to settle for the Q6600 either. Choices, choices... It's sad that I've become so tech fashionable that I refuse to settle for an excellent processor like the Q6600

I've been waiting since January to buy an iMac for my wife but at least now I know the reason for Apple not to update their iMacs (while they've been much faster with the Mac Pro, which I bought in February, and their laptops): they can't affort to upgrade to a processor available in limited supply, it would be suicidal at the moment.
As far as I can see I'll have to sadly look at the miserable configuration of the entry level iMac for a while (1 GB of RAM, Dual Core 2.0 GHz for 1180$/€...), thanks Intel... |

I got an E8400 without much trouble for 189.99$. I later traded it straight across for a 199.99$ Q6600. Seeing as the Q66 was ~250-260$ when I bought in January, I'm liking the way this shortage has treated me. :)
I think the Real Reason 45nm C2Ds are missing and 45nm C2Qs never showed has everything to do with AMD's Phenom being underwhelming and Intel having no desire to outsell itself. |

mid-January to mid-March is two months by my reckoning not three. That's still a long time for an Intel product to go AWOL.

Well, when supply is scarce, why bother to sell those chips in America when you can get more for them in Europe? The geizhals.at search engine (Germany, Austria) says there's some available stock there. Prices are no less than 167,80 EUR (E8200), 214,99 EUR (E8400) and 289,90 EUR (E8500), all boxed models. Ugh.

Strange. I bought a Wolfdale the same week they came out on Newegg. I guess I got super lucky. I was able to pick it up for $219.00. More strange that intel is not pumping these things out in crazy volume.

I'm going to try not to buy another chip. The Q6700 is a nice chip and should keep me up-to-date for a year. Those 45 (M X10**{-9}) Quads are said to run cool and fast.
hmmm...my mind and will power are weak... |

I just ordered an E8400 at way more than it should have cost. I was tired of waiting for the things to show up in bulk. I actually wanted an E8500, but they are impossible to find. This will be my first Intel chip since the P4 3.2 GHz Northwood (space heater).

Nice picture of the Center for Disease Control on the front shot. Lately, intel-idis is starting to become an epidemic.

Same deal in Australia - using PriceSpy, prices have gone from $225-$350 at launch to $265-$400 now, with some retailers putting their prices up by >$50. I'll just have to wait it out, there's no way I'm paying inflated prices :(

I remeber the time when I choose a Pentium III at 500MHz for my upgrade from the 8088 ;-))
Now, for a limited time, I take the E2180 at 2.0GHz for a overclocking test. |

It's taken this long since launch to find a laptop with the new 45 nm (which may well be where all the supply is going).
Laptop arrives tomorrow :-) |

MicroCenter has the E8400 for $199. That's the best price around. Does anyone know when e-tailers can expect new shipments of these chips from Intel? This is complete torture!!!!!! Every day, there's 6 sites I check for availability. newegg.com, microcenter.com, zipzoomfly.com, mwave.com, buy.com, and amazon.com There's a few other sites as well, I just can't think of them right now. MicroCenter is definitely the site I'll order my processor. Yorkfields are supposed to come out this week. I might cave in, and get the Q9300, pending price.

More supply and demand at work.
It also does not help that Intel has little to fear from AMD in the foreseeble future. |

I'm waiting to upgrade my computer to one of these new 45nm's. I really like the looks of the E8500 but may take the plunge to a quad depending on how this availability and pricing thing shakes down over the next couple months.

These chips, coupled with hackintosh working motherboards, are very tempting for an iDVD/iMovie box.
