A midrange card should not be the same length as my motherboard is wide.

In that case, the pricing scheme is supposed to be the following?
$150: 9600GT $175: 8800GS $200: 8800GT (approximate price targets) |

yeah but the 9x00 series seems like it will be just tweaked/multiple gpu setups. I think that both ati and nvidia dropped the ball with the names. This is worse then last generation. Atleast with last gen hardware they had nearly the same names with their refresh. It is becoming more and more confusing.

I don't like them changing the model number to 9xxx for these, don't they use a very similar GPU to the 8800GT?
Also, generally when the model number changes, even the mid and low range parts - using their new technology manage to rival the high end card of the previous generation. Not so in this case. |

would be nice to see it offset the cpu burden with 1080p movies better than the 8000 series, somewhere in the range of 10-15% cpu usage.

Hmm, I liked the GF7600 and GF8600 (particularly with the huge Gigabyte passive cooler) for classic-sized shuttles. It seems that I may have to look "downmarket" in the future. Very dissapointing that video cards continue to get larger (and presumably hotter). I guess we'll see what AMD/ATI cooks up.

Is this the first time a midrange part comes first?
I thought they always started with a high-end model... (not that it really matters, but it just came to my mind) |
