With Sony's MusicPass you have to buy a MusicPass card at a brick and mortar store! If I have to go out and about to buy this I would rather buy a CD.

"Napster's DRM-free MP3 music will be available through the same subscription service as its current protected Windows Media tracks."

Surely that can't be right -- if they let people download MP3s as part of a subscription service, then everyone will subscribe for one month, download the entire music library, and cancel their subscription. How can subscriptions work without DRM, unless they change the rules to include a limit on the number of downloads (as eMusic does)?

Speaking of eMusic, talk about a business model being validated -- those guys had the right idea from the beginning. If the music labels had recognized it back then they'd be in much better shape today. What a wasted opportunity.

I think these articles should be of particular interest to people such as Krogoth and the others who keep running on about the abolishment of physical media for HD video in the near future.

I think this just shows that DRM is not something that will be acceptable when it comes to digital information used in the manner that music is, which is what would happen if HD video were widely available in the same medium.

HD Video Media has DRM now, but when it's self-contained on a disc, you just take the disc to your buddies. You can't do that with most DRM protect digital-only properties, such as music.

Yay, consumers rejoice.

Why am I not surprised that Sony was the last major hold-out?
