Next time you want to make a huge change, I suggest you have a beta page and get comments before it goes live.
As for my opinion, I have a widescreen and hate fixed format. |

I've been away for a few days so it wasn't untill today that I was able to view then new layout. I'm kind of in shock at the moment.... I'll reserve any comment until I've had some time to look around.

Day 3 of the new TR:
#361 I agree 100%. I also find I don't visit as often. I find the new home screen way too cluttered. Oldtech |

Thought I'd mention... I'm one of the (hopefully large) silent masses that likes the new site design. Thanks a lot!
(BTW -- Thanks for the link to the news listing, because that is useful in some cases.) |

Wow, lots of really negative comments. If you stop coming to TR because they changed the layout, then I have to wonder about your priorities. Personally, I found the old site to be a little frustrating to use. I like the new version a lot better, so I would say, "Great Job!"

Wow! I'm suffering vertigo here!
This is a BIG change. I loved the old layout and the white on blue was a nice relaxing place for the human eye. I think you should reconsider that change. I understand your want to move forward, and the new structure is awesome, but the tan two tone on white really hurts the eyes.. The option to change white text on blue background is great, but I think if you made this the default most everyone would have accepted the other changes without much complaint. The white on blue was and is your hallmark. |

The article font is way too small and hurts my eyes. The comment font is a far better size.

On the front page I wish the "Hot Forum Threads" section and the "Latest Blog Posts" would switch places. The blogs don't update as often as the forum. Plus the "Hot Forum Threads" section is how I usually check out the forums since I don't have time to go through the whole forum.
too bad we can't customize the page to our liking. This is the age of Web 2.0 (gah... I hate that term but it's appropriate here). |

Shouldn't it be "Latest News Stories" or just "News" not "Top News Stories"? Are the article items being filtered by popularity?

I truly wish you all the best of luck with the new TR. You guys got this far for a reason, and who am I to suggest I know better. I understand wanting to make your terrific reviews more prominent.
For me, your old, as of a few days ago, formats focus on the latest happenings in the world of computers along with your brief, insightful commentaries and my fellow readers comments is what made Tech Report unique and special. I checked out the site numerous times each day to keep on top of what was happening or to read additional reader comments on things posted earlier. I liked that all the other front page stuff was right there, such as the links to old reviews, links to forum articles, and the poll. I understand I can still do this, but it is no longer the focus. It seems to have been pushed into the background and marginalized. It seems odd to do that to something that made Tech Report so unique and special, but as I said, and I am not being sarcastic, I believe people as capable as you all know what is necessary to ensure that Tech Report grows readership and advertising revenues and value. So far, I have found that I have not been inclined to visit the new Tech Report as habitually as I used to up to a few days ago, but I ain't the one that is going to make you any money anyway. |

I'm trying to give this new version a chance, but I'm a bit slow...
How do I find the most recent TR-written articles, without going to the news.x page? The list of Feature Articles on the left-hand side seems not to be in date order, or am I missing something? |

I like the new design. However, I still don't want to click on 'Read More' on those news articles!

To say I like the new change would be an outright lie.
I find it far harder to find what I want to get at, it increases eyestrain (even when you switch away from the awful new default color scheme), makes the news side column even less accessible then before. Its so bad I no longer want to actually come back to this site, and this is the tech site I check the most often. Please at least make an option so you can change it back. |

After using it for a day or so, I'm warming up to it. Mine is still stuck firmly to white on blue (the sandy color is horrid), but the news.x page isn't that bad.
After reading all the comments in this thread, I'm still trying to figure out why ya'll decided that reducing news to titles in a list was a good idea? All of the people I know that read TR read it first for the high-quality content (and it is still awesome content), and second for it's ease of use. We just go to www.techreport.com and bam, we have news in front of us. Much like a newspaper. Now we gotta click around, boo hiss. It is possible to highlight the features as well as use the "newspaper" style...but I digress. Also, I realize that news.x is there, and thank you -so- much for putting that in (really, it rocks), but why should we have to make the extra step of going there when it was one of the bigger draws on the old one? I dunno. Regardless, like the majority of the rest of the site. Props ya'll. :) |

Few comments:
I really quite liked the simplicty of the old site, It was very easy on the eyes, articles and links were very easy to read. The new site seems very nice and a lot of work has obviously gone into it. I feel a few things were 'overlooked' perhaps. Namely as a lot of people have posted, I have a 24" monitor running in 1920x1200. This uses about half my screen space :( I also find the diagonal-striped purple background, particularly on my TFT grates on my eyes! Its fairly painful to look at for any period of time. I think I may look to blocking/changing the background graphic. |

maybe, when people first visit the new front page, the system could redirect them to a chooser page that lets them pick either the news.x or the new front page, with sample graphics and the description you gave of why one might want to switch.
save the selection as a setting, then let people reconfigure it as necessary. |

First we lose the "-" and now this! How am I supposed to deal with all of this Scott?
But seriously, it'll take some getting used to but all the reasons you gave for changing it were things I've definitely noticed were *ahem* "drawbacks" of the old site. |

Make THIS your front page and I'm pretty sure that most people will shut up (including me).
http://techreport.com/news.x The current front page is a disaster!!! It's ALL about the news! |

Yuck !!! Fixed width, hiss boo. Annoys the daylights out of folks with modern displays. I'm old enought to remember the "New Coke". It didn't fly either. Please give us our good old site back. TechReport was my #2 read every morning after /.
First impressions, I'll give the site a thorough examination, but at first blush I am p!ssed. -The Mad Duke P.S. - OK, I changed my bookmark to the news.x link, that makes me feel better. But PLEASE lose the fixed width, it's really lame. |
