Ok so now that hard drives are big enough (for desktop use), how bout making them go faster, cheaper 10k RPM drives anyone?

32MB cache is great, but why aren't we seeing drives with even larger caches, such as 64MB, or heck, even 512MB? I thought the performance boost offered by a larger cache was worthwhile. Too expensive? Diminishing returns?

So what's the deal with the CinemaStar line? Quieter? Cooler? Branded as "made for high-definition" like those silly "audio only" CDRs?

I'm a bit worried about those new sizes, how are you going to defrag/virusscan those monsters, with growing capacity it won't be long before it takes days to do either, and those aren't proverbial days either.

Perhaps we should build dedicated computers for that task and swap them out when it's time to do that, and keep the OS on a smaller permanent drive.

Or perhaps they can make the firmware defrag them on standby power somehow while your computer is off, but then you'd still have the virusscan issues, although if it's non-executable material on it like multimedia that wouldn't be needed.

I will buy another Deskstar when.... Well never actually. I have two Deskstars right now in a drawer. They work for about 30 minutes then quit. Some sort of a thermal fuse failing? The BIOS will not see them until they cool down. Must be a major design flaw. I used it for testing Vista with a table fan blowing. Anyone know how to fix?

Sweet. I can finally replace my 4*250GB Maxtor RAID array, and I can probably go from 10 to 1 without losing any speed, and while gaining capacity.

That's the good stuff.

The key for me is consolidation. I don't want to run a RAID array - because I don't have the time to invest in building one, and the greater the 'range' to the data (the more devices and systems it is spread across) the more difficult it is to organize it (both mentally and digitally). I run 5 drives in my current rig, an 80, 160, 2 x 250, and 320. I can replace all four of those drives with one of these, and add sequentially as I go on. Eventually the breadth of my media (mostly ripped DVD's - I have muchos bad experience with scratched disks) will span those drives, and I will add another.

Bravo, Hitachi.

So umm, any idea if that "enterprise" version of this drive will boast 5 years of warranty and what the price premium will be over the regular one ? Otherwise, i'll stick with Seagate..

All this news about terabyte hard drives is excellent. Should push the price of 500gb to $100. :)
