Nvidia 9800GTX+ Vs 4850HD

Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:56 am

Nvidia's true face saver is here ...

738MHz core @ 55nm
1836MHz shader
1000MHz (2000Mhz effective) GDDR3
Rate: $229 MSRP
Availability: Mid-July launch

Nvidia is not going down easily...

AMD's 4850HD better be good or 9800GTX+ will steal the show...

EDIT: Spelling mistake...

Considering NV pulls this trick every time ATI releases a competitive card I imagine the Red team has taken it into account.
DDR5 like big brother 4870 (because prices are falling as production ramps up),higher clocks (ATI is also on 55nm and early reports are they have headroom there) and time to optimize drivers for the current games would have to be on the table to counter this obvious move.
Hopefully NVIDIA can make another 8800GT or 9600GT type card and keep the excellent mid range bracket we now have progressing at the current decent prices we are seeing.
Here's the article about it:

i think the specification are for 9800gt not gtx.
gt(112)<gtx<770(480 or 800 shaders ?) by 10% at least so...

Actually, the NDA on the HD4850 is to be / has been lifted today. There are numerous brands of HD4850 for sale outside the US, and there are at least four full reviews in existence.

Never mind, I'm seeing news all around the web on that. Guess they pulled the launch earlier.

When 8800GT was launched it costed me, $320 each. (i have 2)

So given the current price of 4850HD, i am sure they will touch the same price base of 8800GT in some time soon... :)

BTW i have no doubt 2X HD4850 > 2X 8800GT

Oh yeah well I once paid $100 for 4mb of memory

These price wars are great, I should see if I can sell some of my equipment and get a newer video card.

BTW i have no doubt 2X HD4850 > 2X 8800GT

How about 9800GTX vs 4850? :)

I already have 2X 8800GT, which i might sell, if i can get my hands on 2X HD4870 8)

Is anyone else really enjoying this GPU war?

EDIT: Also has anyone actually tested what the 9800GTX performance is like at the new overclocked speeds? How much performance is gained? Basically anyone with an overclocked 9800GTX should be able to say right?

Not even close - my first big money machine had dual ppro200mhz and 256mb of RAM, 4 sticks, I paid $3400 for the RAM alone.

But yeeeee for graphics wars. My 3870 is getting older by the minute.

ah, as i thought. the 48xx series will be competing against the G92. the GTX200 series is just priced so high that it's not even worth considering. maybe it'll join the fray with it gets a 55nm shrink and yields are up, but for now, it's the Geforce 9 series that'll have to keep nVidia alive.

We'll see.... until good, reliable benchmarks are out there, I'm making no assumptions about GTX2xx vs 48x0.

you don't need benchmarks that badly when the prices are already out. GTX200's = ridiculous, 4800's = within most budgets, 9800's = also within most budgets.

you don't even need to look at the GTX200's benchmarks unless you know you've got money to burn.

You need benchmarks if you are going to compare performance. Price, is a bit easier.

Not anymore it is.
nvidia is strong arming etailers to hide the price of their cards.
So while NVIDIA is not dictating sales prices, they are dictating the prices that you and I first see when shopping for video cards. The days of going to Newegg and TigerDirect and comparing prices of full GPU families is gone.
