Core i7 960 released?

Postposted on Sat Oct 31, 2009 10:04 am

Intel has a webpage http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37151 on 960 and Alienware along with NCIX already list the Core i7 960. Although this is just a refresh of 950 it would be nice to see some benchmarks and reviews.

Great, another i7 thats exactly the same as all the other i7's, with a bit of a higher clock and a ridiculous price. Granted, most CPU generations are a series of identical cores that the factory clocks at a particular GHz, but when you can identify $200+ differences in something that is the exact same chip.....

W/E Intel, people should just buy the 920 and make it a 960.

Than again, I think the overall pricetag on Extreme Edition processors are entire BS also. BE's don't run that expensive and they tout the same unlocked multiplier feature. /rage

And what exactly does that have to do with anything you quoted me on? I never even brought the Phenom II (presuming you meant that in your post, not the original Phenom) up in my post, nor in what you quoted. I was saying that I don't feel Intel is changing enough to make these higher priced Socket 1366 i7's worth it over the cheaper priced/lower clocked Socket 1366 i7's (like the 2.66ghz 920). Granted, the 1156 socket i7's I suppose could have been differently priced because they do carry some benefit, but that's not the case.

Now granted, if you trying to indicate that my bringing up BE vs Extreme Edition means I was comparing processor performance you are sorely mistaken. I was just showing how it doesn't cost Intel or AMD an extra $500 to unlock a CPU's multiplier, and that its ridiculous that the Extreme Editions carry such a bloated price tag for pretty much that feature alone.

AMD used to charge an arm and a leg for the FX processors as well, similar to the EEs. The problem for AMD right now is they can't even use that as an advantage because even under extreme overclocking their top end chips still have problems against the i7's. If the PhII's are performing near the i7's, we would not be seeing these prices now.

EE and 1366-i7's are meant to be high end. No point whining about them being expensive, because they are supposed to be.

And personally I thought those were overpriced as well. I understand paying for R&D but i feel being extreme about the price of a product like that is something better not done. I understand the whole supply & demand thing, and also the fact that since they control the market they CAN do that. I just feel like it shouldn't be done.
