So I go to NYU undergrad and I actually work in the library. It's really fascinating to think that many people have died in the lobby that I walk in every day (six kids jumped in 2003 and 2004).

There was apparently a "huge boom" when the kid hit the floor. That's literally 5 feet above my head (I work in the first floor down, the computer center). I would've heard it and ran up there ! ahh well, my shift ended at around midnight last night so I missed it by a bit.

Have any of you witnessed somebody's death?

When I was 5, I saw a guy get shot in a restuarant by his soon-to-be ex-wife. My grandma was the first-responder.
I was the first-responder to a drunk driving accident where the car rolled onto its roof and a guy was pinned between the driver's seat and the roof/ground. That one was pretty bad.
Shouldn't this topic have been before Halloween? Its bringing down my Thanksgiving.

It was more the sounds that stick with you.

I guess technically I died, too. Heart stopped on the operating room table for a couple of minutes. I had had a DNR on, but they brought me back anyway. My mom asked me if I "saw the light." I told her "No, but I knew it was heaven. I could smell the BBQ." She didn't like that at all.

Oh my ! You were in this accident ?! How did you hear the sounds if you were gone passed out? How old were you and you wanted a DNR?
What were the sounds?

Didn't directly witness the incident, but was running the online survey on a construction boat when we recovered a crashed light aircraft off Bergen, Norway. Never nice seeing the three of them still strapped into the cockpit, 400m down under the North Sea =/. Messed me up pretty bad.

I wasn't in the accident, but I was the only person on the scene to assist. It was pretty gruesome. The issue with this one was that the guy had the weight of the car pinning him to the ground from the front seat head rest. I'm sure there were all sorts of internal organ damage.

The time I had the DNR was a different time. I was having another knee surgery. I was 25 at the time, having surgery #5 out of #6 ( I knew #6 was 4 weeks away) and I so I put a DNR on. I figured if God wanted me, he could have me. Well, I had had an epidural for the pain. Its a shot they give you in the spinal cord that numbs you from the chest down. The plan was they were going to give me just enough anesthetic to put me out. Well, I woke up to the sound of the bone saw and the vibrations through my bones and all. I looked up at the anesthesiologist and told him to "put me out." He said okay, gave me too much, and my heart stopped pretty quickly. Anyway, yeah, I still get a few nightmares about the bone saw.

I've seen 3 accidents that resulted in fatalities. One was a motorcycle guy in Yellowstone. He wasn't wearing a helmet, lost control and slammed headfirst into a tree. I doubt he was going fast but he was very dead.
The 2nd was also a motorcycle. It was in Denver, on one of the highways or interstates with concrete dividers. He had a helmet on, but hit ice or something, and slid headfirst into the concrete ramp and 70+miles /hour...also dead.

The last and worst was a on an interstate coming down to Denver. It was split; east bound and westbound were different hieghts because it was carved into a mountain. I don't know exactly how high it was; maybe 40 feet? A large SUV rolled off the top one. It was summer, and I guess they'd had their windows down. One of them got his arm cut off when it crunched the roof...one of them came through the windshield when it landed and it broke...just went out of the place it used to be and landed in a pile of busted glass. I puked. Blood everywhere. Parts.

This one is insane. I'm sorry, but I think you told too much story in too few words.

So this SUV had two people in it. It drove off the higher higher road and fell down onto yours?
And the roof was crushed because it fell on its roof? Which cut off the guy's arm? Somehow the other person in the car was thrown through the windshield?
The man thrown through the window landed in a pile of broken glass? May I ask what body parts were severed?

I think there were at least 3 or 4 in the SUV. It was one of the big ones--suburban, yukon, something in that size range. And it rolled downhill, turning over several times in the process. the roof wound up crunching in, and what I suspect happened (in hindsight, I was too freaked out at the time to realize it) was that someone's arm wound up outside the car while the car was rolling...and the arm got cut off during the mess. It was really chaotic and hard to realize exactly what happened. For a wonder, it didn't actually hit any other cars, although there were a few fairly minor accidents as people got out of the way. I wasn't driving--a friend was--and she wound up going onto the shoulder to avoid it.. What I really remember is Ashley (driver) on her cell phone, crying while she called 911, while the suv laying on it's side in the middle of the interstate, windshield gone, crumpled up, blood all over the place, and at least one dead body very visible. I was trained in first aid well enough--Eagle Scout here--but there wasnt a damn thing I could do. It was in the road, and there were still people going around it. the guy outside the suv was very dead, major head wounds and his chest looked caved in. the others were inside and we had no way to get them out. We didn't wind up staying for the cops, cause we were all freaked out. I'd have been 17, and I don't know how old the other two in the car were. We called the cops and waited for the driver to regain composure and me to quit puking. and then we left. At that point, first responders were there--EMTs--but no LEO's were on scene.
I've seen some bad accidents, but nothing like that before or sense. I've seen ones that you thought would be fatal but weren't, and I've seen the aftermath of some pretty bad ones. Living in mountains makes wrecks worse; when someone rolls a car several times there are bad affects. Or when you hit an elk and it goes through your windshield. But those three were the only ones I saw someone actually die violently. I've seen a few family members pass away after an illness, but it's not the same. You know it's coming and it hurts like hell but part of you is relieved too, or at least I was. But with violent deaths it's different. There's no real warning, it's unexpected and painful looking.

So in the Army for PT on Fridays we usually ended playing a sport, Push ball, combat soccer, football, combat fris-gay, etc, etc. (most of these without any sort of protective equipment)

Anyways long story short we were playing Football against another company. Its suppose to be flag/touch but it gets real rough real quick. Anyways QB throws the ball too high to the receiver jumps up to catch it and then gets his feet knocked upward. The receiver lands head first. This guy broke his neck and it killed him instantly. The medics were near by and there wasnt anything anyone can do.

So the sound.....its awful. I have never ever heard anything like it. It happened about 5 feet from me

Speaking of which, I was watching The Next Iron Chef on Food Network on Tuesday night and the whole theme of the show was Indian cooking. One guy made a bunch of "Indian" dishes with beef. I thought that was really weird. What do you think LordT?

I have a hard time watching most things on the Food network any more, TLC is much worse it's like they don't know who they are anymore all of the odd food shows...

Somebody got hit by the commuter rail here in LA yesterday. At an intersection I ride my bike by every day. Now I don't know how many train cars there are in the fleet. But this is the second death in the 5 months I've been riding.

It's pretty weird to think that I'm probably riding, on a regular basis, in a train car that's killed somebody.

its interesting to think of how sheltered most of us are from this kind of violence. the worst story so far was the SUV one. imagine being in iraq :/

its amazing to think that even some soldiers can return and function in society.
