New iPods may launch on September 9

Mark your calendars, iPod fans. AppleInsider says it can "independently confirm" that Apple will launch refreshed versions of its popular handheld players during a September 9 media event.

The event should see the release of new iPod nano and iPod touch players, both with built-in cameras much like the iPhone's. Actually, photos of purported silicon cases for camera-packing iPods leaked out way back in July. Back then, word was that Apple had settled on cheap camera modules priced at around $10 a pop.

AppleInsider believes Apple will also introduce a new version if iTunes with social networking features. However, we may not catch a glance at the hotly anticipated tablet device until next year. Too bad.

The site adds that Apple spent a few weeks trying to settle on a precise day for the event, but it's told industry partners it finally settled on September 9. The event could take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts or at Moscone West, two locations in downtown San Francisco—about an hour away from Apple's Cupertino campus, if Google Maps is to be believed.
