Nvidia departed from its tradition by releasing a mid-range card, the GeForce 9600 GT, as the first member of the new GeForce 9 series. This card is still based on the same architecture as GeForce 8 offerings, but its performance is considerable for a product priced as low as $150 in some cases. According to VR-Zone, Nvidia now has yet another affordable GeForce 9 graphics card planned.
This time, the newcomer is expected to be dubbed the GeForce 9500 GT, and it should succeed the current GeForce 8500 GT. The upcoming card will be based on a G96 graphics processor, VR-Zone says, and it will have a 550MHz core clock, 512MB of 500MHz GDDR2 memory, and a 128-bit memory bus. If those specs are accurate, the 9500 GT should have 100MHz core and memory speed advantages over the 8500 GT, not to mention twice as much memory.
Considering that the GeForce 8500 GT currently retails for between $55 and $100, this "GeForce 9500 GT" will most likely launch somewhere under the $100 mark. Nvidia has made no announcements about the subject, though.
