Small displays powered by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been slowly trickling into the market in devices like cell phones, MP3 players, and digital cameras. However, large consumer OLED displays like TVs have yet to emerge. That should begin to change on December 1, when Sony plans to introduce its first OLED-based TV in Japan.
As Gizmodo reports, the device will be dubbed the XEL-1, and it will have a display size of just 11". Despite the small screen, the XEL-1 will deliver a 960x450 resolution, a rated contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, a display thickness of just 3mm (0.12"), HDMI input, Ethernet and USB connectivity, and a hefty price tag of 200,000 Yen—around $1,730. Sony apparently hasn't said when it intends to launch the TV in the U.S.
